Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about Breast CT — pain, radiation, cost, insurance, and how it compares to mammograms.

Does the scan hurt?
Not at all. Unlike a mammogram, there is zero breast compression. You simply lie face-down on a comfortable table, and the scan takes just 7 seconds per breast. Patients describe it as quick and completely painless.
Is Breast CT safe? What about radiation?
Yes. The radiation dose from a Koning Vera Breast CT scan is comparable to a conventional mammogram — about 5.8 mGy for a standard breast. This is well within established safety limits for diagnostic breast imaging.
How is this different from a mammogram?
A mammogram compresses your breast between two plates and takes a 2D image. Our Breast CT captures a true 3D image with no compression — no overlapping tissue that could obscure abnormalities. The result is improved visualization of breast tissue, which can aid your physician in a more thorough diagnostic evaluation.
How is this different from Breast MRI?
Breast MRI requires lying in a narrow, noisy tube for about 30 minutes and uses gadolinium contrast. Breast CT is done in an open environment in seconds, uses non-gadolinium contrast when needed, has no contraindications for claustrophobia or metal implants, and can detect calcifications that MRI cannot.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
Yes, a referral (requisition) from a referring physician is required. If you don’t have one, contact us and we can help coordinate with your doctor. Most offices will not schedule without a referral on file.
Does insurance cover this?
Artemis operates on a cash-pay model. Flexible weekly payment plans start at $25/week with no down payment required — your appointment is scheduled once your balance is paid in full. We provide a superbill with CPT codes so you can self-submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
In most cases, yes — diagnostic medical imaging is typically an eligible expense. Check with your plan administrator to confirm.
What if I have breast implants?
Breast CT is excellent for imaging augmented breasts. Unlike mammography, which requires multiple views with painful displacement, our 3D scan provides complete evaluation of the breast and implant in a single, comfortable scan — with no extra radiation dose.
How long does the whole appointment take?
Typically about 15 minutes from walking in to walking out. The actual scan is just 7 seconds per breast — the rest is check-in and positioning.
How will I get my results?
Your images are read by a board-certified radiologist, who sends a detailed report directly to your referring physician. Your doctor will then review the findings with you and discuss any recommended next steps. Turnaround is typically within a few business days.
